He's Only Seventeen!

Happy 17 weeks of wonderful life to Edison!

This week's picture shows a happy baby in a milk-coma...

What a week we've had! I had a minor freak-out on Sunday because Edison is a small baby for his age. I calculated his percentile on the growth charts and he had dropped significantly and was at a 3%. This means, out of 100 boys his age, 97 are bigger than him. Yes, I know its only an average but I was still a little concerned after meeting the babies during our Childbirth Preparedness Class Reunion, who were all a lot bigger than him!

We went to our four month checkup with the pediatrician early to have her check on his weight and make sure that he is getting enough milk. The verdict was - he is on the low end of the growth chart but is developing fine; he's just smaller than most babies. To fatten him up a little bit we are now adding formula to his diet while we are also working on increasing my breast milk.

So far, so good. Edison can definitely tell the difference between the two and prefers the real stuff. Hopefully we'll only have to use the formula for only another month until his next "well baby" visit. We hope to be back to the boob exclusively in no time!

This past week it has also been a joy watching him develop watching him:

* roll over onto his side more frequently
* grab and hold on to his toys
* grab onto and suck on his toys
* pet the cats
* talk (in baby language)

He even seems to know his first word in baby sign language: "hello"
