When we went in for Edison's 18 month checkup with our pediatrician Dr. Bacon (yes, her real name), we had to estimate how many words we thought he had in his vocabulary. Dr. Bacon suggested that by now he should know between 4 to 20 words in addition to "mama" and "dada."
Alisha suggested that he probably actually knew 50 words (words that he could not only repeat but had an understanding of what they meant). I assumed that she must have been exaggerating, and felt a little embarrassed.
After we had put Edison in bed for the evening and had settled into bed ourselves, however, I setup a Google doc and with Alisha started to log those words that Edison actually uses.
I was entirely surprised, and embarrassed at myself for having doubted Alisha (and Edison). 50 words was, in fact a significant underestimate. I counted closer to 200!
Here is the list, organized into subjects. As you can see, Edison's interest in food and his social nature (number of names) are to thank for a good percentage of his growing vocabulary.

There's so many other words he's learned since we made this list/forgot to add: vampire, santa, ho ho ho, hide, noodle, pasta, Ship (our cat's name), bubbles, panda... those are just a few. Its hard to keep track, but yes parental bragging rights indeed! Oh and draw, beluga, gorilla, brush, itsy bitsy spider, Bobo, George, star...
Of course and all the colors that he's now able to identify: red, blue, yellow, etc.
It seems like even this weekend his language development has taken a huge leap forward. I was most blown away as we were leaving the park by Little Man Ice Cream when he said "let's go park again."
